Our hugely popular Nippers section which caters for youngsters aged 7 to 11 years runs throughout the year.
In the summer training takes place every Thursday evening from late May to the beginning of September. We are lucky to have the relatively sheltered beach at Summerleaze and the Sea Pool for the safe training of our youngsters.
Nippers meet at the Nipper Hut on Summerleaze beach and are organised into four training groups of approximately 16 to 20 children with 3 coaches for each group. All volunteer coaches are members of SLSGB and are DBS checked, there is usually at least one Level 1 trained coach per group and there are at least two fully qualified lifeguards who coach in the sea. The qualified lifeguards are responsible for carrying out the risk assessments each week.
The groups are trained in many beach safety skills such as beach and surf awareness and flag signals. They take part in a variety of beach and surf activities and are taught how to use rescue craft in the sea. There is also a "Surf Comp" group made up of year 6 children, who remain with the same coaches throughout. This group undergo training and are assessed for surf life saving competencies in preparation to move on to the club's Junior section.
The onus on Nippers is to learn and gain confidence but the main emphasis is on having fun in a safe beach environment.
During the winter training takes place in the Splash indoor pool where the wave machine is put to good use in introducing Nippers to wave swimming, torpedo rescues and rescue board paddling.
Through fund raising we have purchased specialist equipment tailored for Nippers to use in training and competition.
The Nippers section is so popular that there is a very long waiting list so it is important to put your child's name down well in advance.
