Vicko’s santa run was held this morning at Crooklets beach in wet and windy conditions. Several intrepid runners stepped up to the mark to run the two kilometres from Crooklets to Summerleaze and back along the low tide mark. Heaving seas formed the backdrop and runners had to battle in the face of a brisk sou’westerly wind.
With everyone dressed as Santa a bright band of runners started between the flags near the top of Crooklets beach. Soft sand made the going difficult and the pack soon spread out along the race route marked by a colourful band of marshalls in their high viz jackets with Dave Mayor’s head dress of Santa disappearing into his skull stealing the Christmas hat contest.
Jasmine Finney thought the race started half an hour later and had breezed sown on her bike only to find the runners had departed. Unfazed she leapt off her bike and chased after them at a sprint pace.
In very little time she had run past the entire pack and showed everyone the way home with such a big lead that she may as well have started half an hour late.
Keiran and Stephen cruised their way around all but holding hands, although given that they only emerged from bed about 10min before the race started I guess they needed time to wake up. However they showed no shame in letting Jaz speed past them.
Annie Creo lost her santa hat on the return lap and just like a piece of tissue in the wind her hat took off in the wrong direction with Annie chasing it at speed but unable to trap her hat. After a lengthy chase she managed to retrieve her hat and return to the correct route now having extended her journey by about 20%.
Hero Ron Cann showed that how sprightly he is and certainly did not deserve his “very old” label.
Whilst the adult race took place a kiddies run was in full swing with several mini santas showing their athleticism
Sam Roberts provided the well-deserved reward at the end of the race serving delicious bacon baps with hot chocolate.
